Outspoken TD calls for work permit clampdown

CALLS for a clampdown on the issuing of work permits for foreigners have been made by a controversial TD.

Noel O'Flynn, a Fianna Fail deputy from Cork North Central, published questions he tabled to the Tanaiste that appear to suggest "Irish jobs for Irish workers".

"What in the name of God are we doing bringing workers in when we haven't work for our own people?" he complained to the Irish Independent yesterday.

About 10 years ago, training places for nurses were increased to deal with the shortage of nurses. As an interim measure, international recruitment took place and Philipino nurses in particular were encouraged to come and work here and got visas as non EU nationals because there was a need for their skills here. However, in recent years the number of irish trained nurses has increased by 50% and most of 2008 nursing graduates have not got jobs. After initially being on contract, some Philipino nurses now have permanent jobs ( a dail answer refused to say how many). This is unacceptable and no non Eu national should be eligible for a permanent state job where there are Irish residents willing and able to do the work.
many Chinese nationals in Dublin are working in shops and bars and there is no work for irish students facing higher registration charges (increased to €1500) with maybe fees to come.

Well its a start but we need to renegotiate the 'Free Movement of Labour' clauses with the EU as well.

With 2,000 immigrants a week still arriving here this madness must be brought to an end.

Why is he complaining to the Irish Independent? He is a member of the present government, who implemented this policy. The mind boogles.

If they have been here that long they are probably citizens.

There was a clampdown on workpermits about 3 years ago - virtually no new work permits have been issued since then for anyone except extremely high earners.

Ive often made the prediction that FF would play the cynical race card once the disastrous effects of their policies bore their inevitable fruit . The Irish electorate rejected the Nice Treaty , with FF ignoring the result . They dismissed claims that it would lead to large scale immigraion , which it most definitely did . And implemented it anyway scaring the electorate into believing they country would collapse economically if they didnt reverse their decision . Now that FF have well and truly bollixed the country theyre seeking out the section of society that doesnt have any political voice and seeking to make them scapegoats

this is a hallmark of fascism and not just hypocrisy . If Noel Flynn wa worried about foreigners doing jobs in Ireland hed have campaigned against Nice . But instead he lied to the people . Now hes covering his own back and making foreigners scapegoats .

You're right re the nursing situation
Course this year we are decreasing the amount of university places for nursing!!!!!

The other point is that the filipinos who now qualify as citizens can now move to other countries more easily!!!
