Bobby Sands film beats British actors for British award.

Hunger, the dramatisation of the last days of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, has taken the top prize at the London Evening Standard Film Awards.

Artist Steve McQueen's movie took the best film honour at a London dinner.

Oscar-tipped Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle and The Reader star Kate Winslet missed out on prizes.

Hunger is a very good movie and fully deserves the prize.

I just thought i'd play around with the title a bit, it was ironic and a good sign of matured times that a film about such a subject gets respect from British cinema.

Good to see a film that portrays the fight of political prisoners in Ireland and their battle against the british establishment to achieve political status. Not all Irish people are in the mould of Fianna Fáil/Banker wide boys.
Some were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for what they believed in and were not in it just for personal financial gain.Whether you agree with the political prisoners in the maze or not when you look at the shysters that have held office in goverment in the republic I am in no doubt which had the ultimate good of their people at heart.

The awards are a bit of sham.
Illustrated by the fact that they did a joint award for top actor. Ridiculous.

I saw it and wouldn't describe it as political. In as much as they can, given the core subject, there is an effort to strike a balance.

Not for the faint hearted either - nothing left to the imagination

A fair point - as things stand at present, who would you prefer working on your behalf? Someone who is willing to die for their beliefs they are that committed or some of the scoundrels in office?

Look past the background to the commitment, we havent see men of such commitment down south since in 90 years.
