Actually, you have. Numerous people were murdered by the Free State whilst on hunger strike, e.g. d'Arcy to name but one.

    Bobby Sands died for nothing.
The IRA wanted the end of Stormont, the end of Loyalism, the end of British rule, the unification of Ireland and the creation of a 32-county Irish Socialist Republic.
Instead the IRA has disbanded and disarmed, Sinn Fein are in government with the DUP in the Stormont Assembly, British rule and partition is copperfastened, the Republic of Ireland's has abandoned its constitutional territorial claim over Northern Ireland.
Sands wasted away to a skeleton and suffered an agonising death for nothing.
Thousands of people were killed and maimed for nothing.

The same could be said for the free state, changing the anthem and treating the country just as bad as the British wasnt exactly what people were looking for.

Some would say that the British wouldnt have even tarmacced Tara and paid more attention to Irelands transport network instead of the builders pockets.

    What has anyone gained?

What Republican or Nationalist ever claimed to be working or fighting for a partitioned misrun island?

The British have got what they wanted, NO republican ever has.
The violence is a product of British misrule, show me an Englishman who would starve to death for their imperial union.

Parnell, Maguire, Tone, Pierce, Collins, Sands..... none of them achieved what they desired as they all wanted the same thing.
