There's much more scope for growth in support & membership in the South. Notwithstanding the fact that SF is an all Ireland non partitionist party, the country is partitioned & that must to some extent at least have an effect on the inner dynamics of the party.
Not saying he is at present past it but hes the oldest leader of any of the parties in the Irish state so a vacancy will arise at some point not too far off.

There is no North v South issue - SF will take the BEST person for the job regardless of where they are from. But that person should be in the Dail - that is where the real power will be for SF when they have 20 TDs. Its no good having some leader who stands ouside the gates of the Dail and doesn't have a grasp of the economics debates and so on.

Just take a look at this photo containing all the contenders:

Just glance at the photo and answer honestly: to whom is your eye drawn? My bet is that 99% of people will say Mary Lou. She has star quality. She should stand in the Dail election and that would position her well to take over as party president after 2007 with as many as 20 TDs to play a big role in politics. She is very good on tv interviews on economics as well as the North.

Adams has a couple of years in him but too old to begin a Dail career. In the aftermath of the 2007 election he will be into his sixties when the other parties will have younger leaders. Its clear that there is a new context.
Um, this is a matter of taste I suppose. I sort of prefer the one two places to the left of her.

Your eye is drawn to Pat Doherty?
    Umm, no.

I suppose that I meant left from where she's looking.

I'd been down the pub since three, watching Wales getting thrashed by the All Blacks. So I was tired & emotional as the euphemism has it - & my visio spatial abilities were badly impaired.

Pat Doc can relax - he's quite safe.

    Pax member wtote,

"Sinn Fein's "patriotism" is no good to those lying on trolleys in an overcrowded casualty Dept. No good to those families trapped in poverty, no good to those families who can't afford to pay for books etc. for their school going children. No good to those who do not qualify for medical cards and can't afford to pay for healthcare. "

A simple reply to that is, NEITHER is BERTIE AHERN,S.
Good luck to Mary Loo in Drumcondra.I hope she plays a stormer in St Luke,s Bertie,s much fought over stronghold!
We could do with another 50 Mary Lous.

Very much agree that Mary Lou should be in the Dail next time as leader.

Of course not, I never suggested that Southerners couldn't lead the party, I just wonder if M-L is the right woman for the job...time will tell.
