    Bankers

Each day we gain insight into the machinations of Irish Bankers.

I hate the idea of the government pledging money to these people. The bank shareholders seemed unable/unwilling to exert any control. Why should I have to pick up the tab (ie the government vicariously promising my future pension) for them wo actually gaining any shares myself - I ask in a simple minded way?

Real Question - Do we need an Irish banking sector? Why not just let them go under?

No. Noone should have any need for any sort of loan, or a payments or deposit account service whatsoever.
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.

But we would have to commute to Europe to lodge some money into our accouts. You did say no Irish banking sector.. Or do you mean no Irish listed banks? Or basically no banks owned by Irish people? Or hire lots of foreigners to run Irish based banks? Or what did you mean when you said no Irish banking sector?

A champion of the people emerges with the age-old and appealing promise of "something for nothing" - to be financed through every-increasing taxes. Supply and demand are thrown out of gear - the overhead goes up; the effective use of human energy goes down; the standard of living is lowered because money cannot buy wealth that is not produced.

By "Irish banking sector" I mean those banks operating in Ireland to which the government is offering guarantees from Irish taxpayers. In spite of these guarantees long term investors remain suspicious and share prices remain rock bottom, only "vulture" capitalists sniffing around.

Personally I don't mind internet banking if it allows me to bank with companies that have not been involved with fueling the Irish property bubble.

Are there not larger, more truthful and ethical, and more intelligently run banks (banks competent enough to recognize a bubble as a bubble - getting out before it bursts) still solvent in Europe? And if so would they not step in to a vacuum created by the implosion of the Irish banking sector?

I wonder whether bankers or drug dealers are the biggest plague on society. I would think bankers, as they certainly cause much more misery and devastation,
