72,000 Irish passports issued around the world

I'll say nothing - just read it yourself....

'A TOTAL of 72,000 Irish passports were issued to people not born in this country last year, the Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed. The department said it was not concerned about the volume of Irish passports being issued around the world.'

One of my siblings lives abroad, her new child was not born in Ireland and indeed did get 1 of those 72,000 Irish passports last year.

so just under 1/2 of them came from the UK, no big surprise there at all, and a large number of them from the US also, the interesting question would be why these people wanted Irish passports ? personally i know some US and UK citizens whom travel on Irish passports as its seen as a safer passport to travel on (in the same way as the Canadian / swiss, etc are) esp if travelling to certain parts of the world. for those obtaining them from US, Canada, Austrailia, NZ, South Africa i'd wager it was largely to have an EU passport for work / residency benefits

what would be far more interesting is to know what those from Africa and Asia want with Irish passports........

The largest number were from the UK, where 32,131 people born in England, Scotland and Wales applied for a passport. Another 13,202 passports were issued to people born in the US, 4,187 to Australians, 2,440 to New Zealanders and 2,106 to Canadians.
I think it's reasonable to assume that the above are Irish citizens by descent so I'm not bothered about them.

Of the 4,041 passports issued to South Africans last year, many did not involve the descendants of Irish emigrants. One senior garda said: "These would be people who might have applied for asylum, had married an Irish citizen or otherwise sought naturalisation at some point."
South Africa is clearly a democracy, and is not one of the countries where FGM is widespread (the FGM-prevalent countries are roughly east and west on a horizontal line through the middle of Africa and then up to the northeast of the continent). South Africa should be on a list of "safe-countries" and no asylum-applications whatsoever should be accepted from there. Aparteid ended in 1994.

More than 50% of all the Irish passports handed out last year went to people born in other European states.
And so 32,000 out of those 36,000 were born in the UK - mostly of Irish parents I assume, with around 4,000 in other EU states. I don't really see a problem here.

Of the 71,212 applicants, only 9.4% were from Africa and just 0.79% hailed from South America.
I assume a lot of the Africans are asylum-seekers applying for naturalisation or who have been naturalised. While opposed to racism, the reality is that the vast majority of asylum-applicants are found to be bogus and should not be rewarded with citizenship or leave to remain.

A huge number of white south africans discovered Irish grandparents during the 1980's. it was very difficult to travel on a SA passport in the 80's.

Do passports issued to overseas applicants still have EU graffiti on them? British overseas passports dont.

I have no issue with South Africa. Unlike USA and Australia, it allows Irish passport holders to live there.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.
