Despite the Government only sitting for 7 weeks so far this year, Dail business was suspended for an hour today and half an hour yesterday as the Government failed to provide enough business for the Dail to address.
David Stanton, Fine Gael Spokesperson for Dail reform, is clearly livid.
“In a time of economic crisis, health service scandals, education cutbacks and the highest unemployment rate in more than 10 years, it is simply inconceivable that elected representatives should be left by this Government with nothing to debate in the Dáil.
“Dáil time is both valuable and scarce. When the legislation programme for the Autumn Dáil session was published, there were 16 Bills currently at various stages on the Dáil Order Paper. In addition to these Bills, there were a further 19 awaiting publication with numerous others expected to be published in 2009 or later.
“The Government said that they were providing a robust programme of legislation but this simply isn’t the case.
“The second suspension of the Dáil due to lack of legislation in two days clearly highlights the chronic need for Dáil reform. Despite Fine Gael having published a lengthy brief of measures to reform the Dáil, the Government is still failing to put any concrete proposals forward.”
