TaraWatch may field candidates - Irish Times

Tara M3 questions to political parties

Irish Times - News Round up 29 October 2008
In Short - The Irish Times - Wed, Oct 29, 2008

TaraWatch has sent questionnaires to the political parties in advance of next year's local and European elections asking them to outline their positions on the controversial M3 upgrading.

The parties are asked 10 questions, in particular whether they support the current route of the M3 or a route farther away from the Hill of Tara.

TaraWatch spokesman Vincent Salafia said it is considering fielding candidates if the response from the political parties is not sufficient.

So Vincent Salafia thinks Vincent Salafia might stand in the European Elections then?

Does Vinnie understand that the Local and EP elections have no bearing on the composition of the Government?

    Possible general election

It looks increasingly possible there will be a General Election before then. The Labour Party are on an Election footing, and I don't think they mean local and EU.

At least he's concerned with European issues, not local ones. Would Vincent not be better running in the Local or General election?

Mr Salafia has not stated he will run. There are many other TW members. You are making three questionable assumptions.

    1. That there will not be a General Election in the short term

    2. Tara is a national as well as a local issue. Tara is a national monument and the M3 is being built under the National Development Plan. So taxpayers from all around Ireland are paying for it. In fact, the EU is suing Ireland over the lack of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the NDP, and all projects like the M3 therein.

    3. The Tara issue is a European issue, as well as a local issue, as it is a piece of European Heritage, and the European Commission are suing Ireland over it:

MEPS have written a joint letter over it:
Irish Examiner - 2008/01/10: Steer well clear of Tara, say MEPs

How will the political establishment survive this news? Surely the whole system will be rocked to its very foundations?

Haven't you noticed? It's already rocking. If you haven't then maybe come down to the Dail at 6.30 today and see for yourself.
