Nathaniel Rothschild is embroiled in a dispute which could force the resignation of Conservative Shadow Chancellor George Osborne. Rothschild's motive is to defend his friend Peter Mandelson. During his time as EU trade commissioner, Mandelson was an enthusiast of the agenda of globalisation and lower tariffs, even though this could lead to significant job losses, not least in Ireland.
Nathaniel's father, Lord Jacob, held a large fundraising function for John McCain in April this year. There are question marks over the propriety of the fundraiser. McCain's hostility to the Putin regime in Russia seems to date to 2003 when oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, owner of oil company YUKOS was arrested. McCain demanded Russia be thrown out of the G8. It subsequently emerged that Lord Rothschild was a major shareholder in YUKOS and khodorkovsky transferred his stake to Lord Rothshild after his arrest. Most of the assets of the company were eventually seized by the Russian government.
