Finian McGrath Withdraws Support For Government

Well, its official now. TD Finian McGrath tonight announced that he has pulled his support for the government.

Independent TD Finian McGrath has withdrawn his support from government.

He made the announcement at a press conference in Dublin this evening.

Deputy McGrath said he was taking the decision because of the government's decision to means test over-seventies for a medical card.

He said he was doing so with regret, but feels he has no other option.

Does this decision stand even if the govt reverses the decision?

So will we see a cascade effect now?

It does put some of the other independents in a very tricky position but the main problem for FF will be eliminating Harney and this has made it somewhat harder. I wonder if any approaches have been made to other potential government partners? The most radical and effective thing that FF can do now is to immediately sack Harney.

What about all the various options he outlined during his many media appearances during his week of prevarication?

Cowen needs to steady the ship soon or he could have a real mess on his hands, although I do wonder if some FF Bankbencers would rather be in opposition for the next 3 years during the recession.

I wonder if Brian himself would like to be in opposition if there is any major recession . . .

They'll just stuff some money in his mouth that he can use for his area, patt him on the head and say "you didn't see nothing about no medical cards"
