Cuba - an exporter of oil to the U.S.?

    With the discovery of oil
off the coast of Cuba, equal in quantity to the total reserves of the U.S.A., are we about to see a sudden change in the U.S.'s relationship with its previously impoverished neighbour?
With a show of humility, perhaps the Cubans might even sell some of their oil to their overbearing northern neighbours? The price might be high, of course: opening of trade; removal of Guantanamo base, etc. Now that the Cubans have a massive bargaining chip, things have just got very interesting geopolitically-wise in that region...

With a socialist government in charge in Cuba, we can at least expect to see the full total of the wealth generated being used to help the people of that island. And, in particular, to bolster their excellent health service. Compare this to our own island, where the Corrib gas find will not much benefit the state (extremely low and generous taxes rates to exploration companies), for example, and where pensioners are now being robbed of their medical cards, in an already hopelessly dysfunctional health care system, to effectively bail out property developers. Fianna Fail - Cutbacks hurt the old, the sick and the handicapped. Indeed!

Maybe an invasion to "free" the Cuban people which just so happens to coincide with this discovery.

It would be great to see Cuba with some sort of barganing chip like Chavez has, and which they can help improve their society.

Cuba is a country where the elderly ruler handed over power to his brother without an election. A country where people are not free to leave if they wish to, a country where prostitution(exploitation of women_) is rife.
A real socialist paradise right enough.

Oh dear gods. More oil! Will it never end? Will someone please think of the children?

Well, I suppose this could be good for Cuba. Assuming there isn't some "reason" brought up to invade, like "regime-change" or WMD's or some such.

I can just imagine Pedro at the beach watching APCs landing and being told by Marines they're here to get rid off the WMDs.

Ah well given Russia's belated support for Cuba again and intention of staging bombers and ships there it looks like US is struggling for supplies again.

I would hope for your own integrity you do not believe Cuba is socialist. Call it totalitarian, state capitalist or a dictatorship, but its completely inaccurate and wrong to call it socialist.
