With the discovery of oil
off the coast of Cuba, equal in quantity to the total reserves of the U.S.A., are we about to see a sudden change in the U.S.'s relationship with its previously impoverished neighbour?
With a show of humility, perhaps the Cubans might even sell some of their oil to their overbearing northern neighbours? The price might be high, of course: opening of trade; removal of Guantanamo base, etc. Now that the Cubans have a massive bargaining chip, things have just got very interesting geopolitically-wise in that region...
With a socialist government in charge in Cuba, we can at least expect to see the full total of the wealth generated being used to help the people of that island. And, in particular, to bolster their excellent health service. Compare this to our own island, where the Corrib gas find will not much benefit the state (extremely low and generous taxes rates to exploration companies), for example, and where pensioners are now being robbed of their medical cards, in an already hopelessly dysfunctional health care system, to effectively bail out property developers. Fianna Fail - Cutbacks hurt the old, the sick and the handicapped. Indeed!
