Our hero and fearless defender of the public purse, Minister for the Environment Dick Roche, has clamped down on the over-spending and wildly extravagant lifestyles of Councillors, according to todays Irish Times
The measure follows controversy after Fine Gael councillors were last month forced to drop plans to claim State expenses for attending a party conference in AthloneIn addition, he has told local authorities to inspect more closely the types of conference that councillors attend, amid suspicions that many of those chosen have little or nothing to do with local authority business.![]()
(Take note of how the Irish Times, let alone the Wicklow Windbag himself, conveniently forget to mention that not a single penny was claimed by Councillors attending the FG conference in Athlone. But we sha'nt be too shocked by that)
The allegation that Fine Gael was spending €50,000 on their Athlone conference (even though FG didn't spend a penny of taxpayers money on it) provoked an orgy of red-faced foot-stamping from Dick Roche that would have made Rockofcashel proud.
But what I want to know is:
Why was Roche not even slightly miffed when it emerged this week that his own Government has pissed roughly €160 million down the pan this week ??
And what is his opinion of Noel Dempsey's (a predecessor of his) assertion that this is a "very, very small" amount of money?
