The sad thing is: if he wins it he will actually think that he deserved to win.

It must be said that every year all kinds of crooks and unsuitable characters get nominated, the difference between being nominated and winning is large - although Blair in particular has many powerful friends so this raises his chances somewhat - the award itself has been tarnished in the past, Kissinger has won it - so Blair's involvement in the massive criminal act that was the Iraq war won't necessarily hurt his chances. I wish Ahern would just quietly fade into oblivion, the undignified way he is sniffing around - trying to launch himself again in Ireland is embarrassing.
I think that's a good point. The nobel peace prize is a complete joke. When you give it to mass murderers like Henry Kissenger then it loses all credibility. So in short it would not suprise me if a complete charlaton like Ahern won it.

Initially I thought that there was an error and this should have been filed in the political humour section...

However, he's not in the running for the Nobel Taoiseach prize or the Nobel Auditing award....his ability to broker a deal in the North far exceeded his ability to refuse lots of money from wealthy pals.

I don't think anyone can credibly question his commitment to the North.

Bringing discredited sectarian politicians together is not the answer. The assembly has shown itself up to be an utter calamity. In fact the biggest party in Stormont, the DUP, was completely opposed to powersharing all along!

I can't believe I'm cheer-leading Ahern here but the fact remains that many historic landmark agreements were reached in the North with the help of his stewardship.

You do not see a power-sharing assembly as the answer...so what is?

    Auld Bertie boy..

Id most certainly give it to Bertie.
Id be giving it to him for bringing magic to new levels..
This being based on his hudini style disapearance a couple of weeks before we were in recession

Do you honestly see the future of northern Ireland based upon sectarianism and parties like SF and the DUP?

The future is about bringing workers from all communities together and building political movements that represent working people and are not domintaed by fear and hatred. The SF and DUP parties are rotten to the core and no progress can be made through them.

That sounds like a wonderful plan, in magic fantasy land - talk to people and just tell them to love one another...?

All of that will come with time obviously (hopefully), but why do you think that the DUP won a landslide in the most recent election, wiping out the UUP. Or why Sinn Fein have made the more moderate SDLP extinct? Because they are representative of their respective communities.

Are you actually saying that it's impossible that the unionist and nationalist communities could begin to vote for the same party if it represented their economic and social interests? Oh but non-sectarian politics is just for fantasy dreamers according to you!

The easy route and lazy route is to do deals with sectarian opportunists like SF and the DUP. These two parties do not represent the people of NI, they betray and hold back the people of NI. The idea of powersharing completely endorses sectarianism and gives it an even bigger platform.
