Tanaiste asks C&AG to investigate FAS

The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment, Ms. Mary Coughlan, today said that as a follow-up to the concerns raised by the publication, before the summer, of the Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General into the procurement practices in FÁS, she has decided after her recent discussions with the Chairman and the Director General of FÁS, to request the Comptroller and Auditor General to report on the effectiveness of the management and control systems that are in place generally across the FÁS organisation.

This examination is to ensure that appropriate public procurement procedures exist to prevent or detect irregularities or wrongdoing and, in particular, examine and report on the activities of the FÁS Corporate Affairs area since 2000.

The Tánaiste emphasised that she is committed to ensuring value for money and the best possible use of scarce public resources in these challenging economic and employment market circumstances.

Which will go before the committee, who will refer it to the minister, who will "launch" (************************************ stupid term) the report, then leave it on the shelf with the health reform reports and forget about it.

I think that this has now come out after the directors of FAS already defended their spending indicates there is something deeply wrong with how State/Semi-state mamangers view the expenditure of Public funds.

With the government looking to curb civil service expenditure, the way to stave off large lay offs is to axe the best paid who are cavalier with the public money aswell.

So Coughlan comes out of the woodwork after weeks in hiding and annonces an investigation into an investigation!

Take a bow. A blue ribbon award for our esteemed Tanaiste, Mrs Coughlan.

Meanwhile, the economy is tanking and the risk of a bank run is very real.
