    Ireland the Ultimate Nanny State

Ireland is among the most heavily-regulated countries in the world and has become the ultimate "nanny state", according to new research.
We have 267 organisations with statutory powers which overlook every aspect of the economy and how we live our lives, with regulation in more areas than 48 other countries surveyed.

And one quarter of the 52 public bodies dedicated to regulation has been created in the past four years, despite a Government commitment to check if agencies could be merged.

Nanny State is the wrong term for it. Most nannies take care of the children. This is like one of those horrible British nannies that shake their kids to death.

As my lecturer once put it: 'Ireland has enough bodies to fill a cemetary, and enough boards to make the coffins'

Re: Ireland the Ultimate Nanny State

Funny that they manage to produce some many decision making bodies ... down to local level

Yet they ensure that interested people are kept out of the decision making process ... we are forced to vote, once-every-five years , in bucket, geographical constituencies for representatives who can then feck off and focus where ever they like.

And mysteriously then these self same representatives will deny all responsibility for the Quangos (oh we gave them independent power !)

If we really need so many statutory bodies ... why not let the people vote directly ?

Let's stick with the once every 5 years , elect 165 representatives ... but instead of forcing us to vote for generalists (due to size of constituency bucket) why not have a national list ?

Yes in the old days a national list of say 1,000 candidates would have been unwieldy ... but now we have computers so

    This isn't e-voting - instead e-Ballot Printing !

    1) Get every candidate to create a single screen web page
    2) Put eBalloting machines in the polling stations
    3) So people can print their own STV ballots with the candidates of their choice in order
    4) Present a Google type interface ... so someone could type in [Fianna Fail, Kerry] or [Health Service] or [Libertarian] or [Communist] or [John Murphy] or [legalise drugs] ... or whatever took their fancy
    5) Print ballot and pop in box.

That way we'd end up with 165 TDs that really represented the people and have clear areas of action/responsibility ! No need for quangos anymore (or at least they'd be directly supervised)

Geographical constituencies ensure that individual TDs have very little responsibility - kiss a few babies bottoms, go to a few funerals and claim credit for the new parish pump.

Paddy Mcginty land (RoI) is probably the number one country in western Europe for passing laws, and the worst by a long shot in enforcing them. Next time any of you are out for a walk just count the amount of motorists you see driving and using a mobile phone.

Just shows how much this government has wasted the last few years under the cloak of the Celtic Tiger.
Just hope that they can pull some of them back now.
There is plenty of fat to cut off this public sector.

Well, a Pole has been arrested in Cork for dangerous driving, in which an Irish girl died. Numerous Poles have been convicted of Rape lately. (which I find worrying)

    Is that not Law enforcement?

I can't agree with that. We sometimes like to view ourselves as rebellious outlaws in this country, but compare the reaction to smoking bans in Ireland and Germany.
