    CIE to charge for parking

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/0717/rail.html

    CIE actively discouraging public transport.??
The pr man was on Newstalk this morning and his explanation was that we'd pay it.
We already have a terrible rail service that must be one of the most expensive in europe.

This could cost a an extra commuter €800-1000 per year. and earn CIE 2-4million extra a year.

Well done the greens!! You are doing a wonderful job.

Maximum cost is €416 a year assumming use it every week.

CIE's job is to provide transport services not car parks, if they are provided then have duty to charge. Alternate is let them sell the car parks to highest bidder to do whatever they want.

Sorry my mistake €416 is the max per individial - but there is a potential of 800 per full time equilavant - i.e. how many cars park in each space each day.

I understand that CIE are responsible for providing public transport. They do not have a duty to start charging, and it's ridiculous to say so, having provided car parks for free until now it shows absolute contempt for the customer to start now. The Car Parks are built. The maintenance costs should be included in the price.
They are only charging this in certain car parks.
A lot of these stations are not in walking distance for the town they serve.
It is a punishment for commuters, a stealth tax whatever you like.
It will disincentivise people from using their services and next year this will probably be a 5er a day.
More than likely 95% of people will be bound to pay it but it doesn't make it right - your taxes already bought all this?

Parking facilities that are in use all day for just €2! Those cars being left there mean that people using the car park even to let people off can't get space. The money to expand the car park facilities isn't going to come from the moon, you know. Charging those using the car parks provided that money goes into expanding and improving the car park facilities makes sense.

By the same logic, we should charge more and more for public transport. Only that way will we ever have a quality system.

Capital put into redeveloping car parks was taken from funds designed for public transport. If people don't wish to pay thats their choice and CIE can dispose of the land and reinvest the proceeds in Public transport. If it forces people not to leave their car there then well and good. Idea that its a huge issue is a nonsense as people have a choice i.e. don't leave your car there.

Idea that its €800 per space is rubbish as most cars will get left at 8am and collected at 6pm. There isn't that much demand after that.

Normally the public exchequer funds infrastructural developments - CIE are about providing a public transport service not raising infrastructural investment funds. They simply should not be allowed to introduce unilateral stealth taxes on behalf of the government.

Look when you go to Houston you have to pay to use the bathroom - in a public service.

CIE is an effectively an executive arm of the department of transport- it is there to keep the buses and trains running and manage the spending of infrastructural investments on behalf of the people of Ireland.
Similarily it is not OK for public hospitals to charge you to park.
It serves no purpose except maybe taxing car use which should be covered by the road tax. Or taxing patronage of the public services which is already covered in your taxes and fares /service charges.
If it's implemented in Dundalk then why not kilkenny? If it is ok for CIE and hospitals then why not FAS offices, social welfare offices, schools, garda stations, polling stations etc.
Why are they targetting certain sectors of the public?

Its part of a much bigger government ethos which has completely severed it's relationship with the people. The ministers look for more and more ways to fund their avarice and disgusting waste. They suck more and more cents out of our pay packages and pisss it all away.

Aye, but that 50c is a small price to pay for your syringe full or heroin, hand job from a homeless guy and half naggin of vodka.

The turnover on this venture will be over 5 million euro, yet CIE are only getting 1 million euro of it?

Do I smell a large brown envelope?

I understood from the numbers on the telly 2 per day, 4000 spaces, 8 per week if you want a multi-pass that the guesstimate was going to be 2 million. Where is the 5 million coming from?

If it is the case that the operator gets more than 10/15% then IR need their heads examined.
