    Selling "clocked" cars

A report in todays Irish Times suggests that a Galway firm has given an undertaking to the Consumer Agency that they will not sell "clocked" cars and that they are compensating 3 customers----------------Ithought this was a criminal offence and wonder why the agency so beloved of Brian Cowan did not apparently inform the Gardai.

    Re: Selling "clocked" cars

A few years ago I tried buying a second hand car. I have to say I was shocked by the sharp practice. I was offered, as single owner low milage cars, Ex-taxis, Hackneys, fleet and write-off repairs. Everyone one was clocked. Thereafter I never went back to a garage, dodgey practive is way to common. I also avoid independant traders. I guy who lives near me bring in heaps (I mean rusting junk). Within a week he has them all done up and looking like new. By chance i took a look in the BuyandSell and found what he was claiming they were - more ripping off.

    Of course it's common practise.

I know of a man who bought a 10 year old car from a well known dealer. There was 80,000 on the clock.
By chance, the man met the former owner who asked how the car was going and when he noticed the clock he told him when he traded it, there was 160,000 on the clock.

Lo and behold, a brand new car was on the street a week after, with the dealer with his tail between his legs.

The practice has died off a bit since the introduction of the NCT. Once a car is three years old the milage is recorded and it become easy to see if somethig funny is going on. On one and two year old cars all bets are off.

My experience of the NCA is that it is a vanity, a talking shop with no teeth and a waste of time. Good idea, but crap implementation. I have had good reason to have issue with them due to dubious business practices on behalf of a gym - they kept taking the direct debit money out of my bank account, despite me adhering to the the letter of their contract and cancelling my membership, via registered post and email well in advance of the timescale required, yet they kept debiting the account. However, when I rang the NCA they really werent interested in helping, the best they could do was ask me was I in line with their terms and conditions, which I was. After that, they didnt really do much, bar ignore my mails. Got it sorted myself in the end, so they fukkk off with themselves as far as I am concerned.

the NCA have the easiest job in the world. 'everything should be better, cheaper etc'

My friend was refurbishing an old Audi 80 and when he dismantled the dash there was a note in the odometer which read:

    'Oh no, not again'

Clocking cars would fall foul of the CRIMINAL JUSTICE (THEFT AND FRAUD OFFENCES) ACT, 2001 Section 6

    Re: Selling "clocked" cars

Apparently, it's the Consumer protection Act 2007, which is the most relevant piece of legislation (which also establishes the NCA). The act provides for stiff penalties and the right for affected consumers to get compensation. So, the question is why did this quango not use the legislation that was provided for the purpose? Obviously, legal proceedings cost money and aren't guaranteed to succeed, but the law is there, and they are supposed to enforce it. Otherwise, they should move aside, and let somebody else do it.

My friend e-mailed and sent numerous letters to the NCA, regarding the same practice being carried out by a certain cable company. He never got a reply to any of them. So he then sent a letter to the NCA complaining about the NCA. They are useless.
