EU to crack down on illegal immigration.

It looks like we may back Sarkozy's plans to crack down in the illegal immigrants.

Ireland may sign pact to crack down on illegal immigration

THE GOVERNMENT says it may sign up to a major new initiative designed to crack down on illegal immigration and co-ordinate asylum policies in the EU.

Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern will meet fellow EU justice ministers in Cannes today to debate a European pact on immigration and asylum.

It looks like the Government's willingness to back this might well be linked to a 'sweetner' deal on a 2nd Referendum now that it has emerged that Immigration was indeed a factor in why people voted NO - especially in urban working class areas.

It would be great if it works but at this stage its going to be an uphill task.

I would prefer that rather than signing a legally binding document that we agree to incorporate as much as we can into Irish Law but retain the right to change those Laws that are shown to be counterproductive.

The EU were going to harmonise sockets once too.

Yeah and straighten out those bent bananas once and for all too!

    + make potatoes spherical.

+ standardise the taste of beer

+ regulate the shapes of bread.

But I'll believe it when I see it!

Let's just make sure we know what we are signing up to otherwise we will be giving more hostages to Fortune.

Im generally socially liberal but would have no difficulty with the general proposition. As long as the controls are proportionate and fair I say, good.

"EU to crack down on illegal immigration." That's a good one.

Coming soon... "Al Quieda to cut down on violence."

By the way, please don't be fooled by any of this empty rhetoric coming from the EU. The Eurocrats often like to make bold statements, that are nothing more than soundbites, in order to appease and reassure people who are worried about the direction we're going in.

They will use a soundbite - in this case, the claim of "getting tough on immigration" and dangle it infront of us, like a juicy piece of bait. It's a deliberate distraction. While we're all talking about that, what we're NOT all talking about, is the fact that the EU wants LEGAL immigration to go through the ROOF.

They want to add no less than 20 MILLION immigrants over the coming years, to "fill labour shortages" i.e line the pockets of businesses who want cheap labour.

This is good news and is an example of why I still support EU membership unless we are pushed too far. Illegal immigration must be addressed or the govt will not get even an amended form of it past us.

Tomorrow, Mr Sarkozy will propose a new EU "pact" on immigration. Its aim is the "harmonisation of asylum regimes" and the strengthening of EU border controls – while also increasing the number of immigrants permitted to work in the EU because of their useful skills. His aim is a common European asylum system.
