    Bertie Ahern and Snobbery

    Reading this site and listening to a lot of the commentary about Mr Ahern, one can't fail to get the impression that a lot of the opposition to Bertie Ahern is based on snobbery.

    * He didn't go to Blackrock, Gonzaga, Wesley or any of the other establishment schools
    * He doesn't fratanise with the 'luvies' like Fintan O'Toole et al
    * He drinks Bass rather than Châteauneuf-du-Pape
    * He's from an ordinary background
    * he mispronounces some words
    * he's 'one of us'

    I can't help thinking that the jealousy about Mr Ahern's achievements are based more on the fact that some people believe he was never good enough to lead Ireland rather than any moral superiority.

    Re: Bertie Ahern and Snobbery

    I know and like plenty of people who didn't go to Blackrock, Gonzaga, Wesley or any of the other establishment schools, who don't fratanise with the 'luvies' like Fintan O'Toole et al, who drink Bass or whatever rather than Châteauneuf-du-Pape (only god knows why), who are from an ordinary background, who mispronounce some words.

    I don't like Ahern, not because I'm a snob, but because he is a liar and a crook.

    Whatever rationalisation you need to comfort you is fine by me. One thing's for sure, he had more money going through his accounts than I ever will, and keeps much more blue-chip company.

    Re: Bertie Ahern and Snobbery

    That snobbery allegation is bogus. Blackrock or Gonzaga boys ain't popular because of their alma mater. Most popular politicians/individuals come from ordinary backgrounds . Ahern's background is far from poor or working class . Drumcondra has been middle class in my 20 years living here. He did'nt come from a poor innner city or rural family. He came from an ordinary family like vast majority of popular/widely liked people. Fintan o'Toole lives near me and Bertie on Griffith Ave here in Drumcondra and he came from Cabra and Pat Kenny came from around there too and they are'nt subject to this alleged snobbery either. Maybe some rich Irish people are snobby about Ahern but they are few and far between and are probably snobby about people living in their own areas and in their own kid's schools. Ahern is a chancer and a spiv, pure and simple and the smart people saw that all along.

    Christian Brothers educated and never lived on Dublin's southside and I still think Ahern is a crook.

    He has countless very rich friends, who loved to give him thousands upon thousands of pounds, just for the fun of it. Yeah Bertie is really one of the people.
