I can't help thinking that the jealousy about Mr Ahern's achievements are based more on the fact that some people believe he was never good enough to lead Ireland rather than any moral superiority.
Having accepted the logic that the reason I dont like Ahern is due to the reasons listed above, Ive reached the inescapable conclusion that I dont actually like myself either, for the very same reasons listed above.
Really? I had you down for a member of the élite. Must be the posh handle you use.
    It is posh, isn't it?

Im more of a champagne lifestyle on a lemonade income kind of guy.

Understand - but given the chance - I can't help myself. It is a real disappointment to have this "Celebrity lifestyle" Taoiseach as our remnant of the success of the country - if we can't take him seriously who will on the international stage.

He intends using his website to up his profile on Google - I think that is a dangerous lack of understanding of Google, for instance, a blogger may take the phrase "Bertie is a crook" and link that phrase to his website's url - if this link is navigated enough times, "Bertie is a Crook" will be at the top of the Google search....I wonder are there any bloggers who would have the will to try this!

I know people who grew up with Debert. His media "accent" enraged them. Drumcondra, as Joyce said, is where the best English is spoken.

Ahern's normal accent is standard Irish, and in fact very nice to listen to

The language snobbery directed at Bertie Ahern has two parts to it that tend to get conflated, unfortunately.

Bertie Ahern’s pronunciation of some sounds is common to a significant number of Irish people. It therefore qualifes as a feature of the English spoken in Ireland and there is no justification for sneering at it.

The lexical misfires are personal, however.* Botches such as “upsetting the apple-tart”, “smoke and daggers”, or “Ireland’s West Bank” make me wince as well as smile.

*Edit: Assuming they were not intentional, of course. Hard to tell.

I have no problem with regional accents, I am from Galway myself. Bertie simply has no grasp of grammer or syntax. He simply cannot speak correct English, which is a totally different issue than having a strong accent. Whats the issue with admitting that?

The first poster (and others, I think) referred to the mispronouncing of words, creating the impresson that they were criticising his accent. If you could produce some examples of these deficiencies in grammar and syntax, they might make for interesting analysis. In-depth studies show that virtually no individual's spoken output is error-free, incidentally.

Oh I am not sugesting that mine or anyone's in particular is prefect. Simply that his is particularly bad. Having met him I would say that he is not TOO bad one to one but he gets tongue tied when he speaks in public.

You met Bertie - WOW - could you not have done us all a favour and taken him out on the spot, his time has gone, we can save on his myriad of pensions and expenses, offices etc., etc.
