I recieved this e-mail yesterday that may be of interest to users of Politics.ie

The British Library is coming to a city near you

    Dear sir/madam,

As a registered user of British Library Direct you are already familiar with one of the ways you can access the most diverse collection of research materials in the World, but would you like to find out about how else we can support your research?

The British Library exists to support UK research at all levels. Over the next few months, we will be touring the UK showing researchers like you how to make the most of the British Library collection. Each of these free 2 hour sessions will show you:
    • How you can get free, unrestricted access to over 600 of our databases by visiting one of our libraries
    • How we can support research at your place of work
    • Our exciting plans for making the collection more accessible.

The sessions are free to attend and will take place at the following venues:
    • Birmingham, 27th September
    • Manchester, 3th October
    • Newcastle, 14th October
    • Dublin , 11th November

    • London, 15th November

If you would like further information, or would like to reserve your place, please contact me at emma.wilson@bl.uk stating which venue would be most convenient to you.

May I also take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in British Library Direct and I hope that we can continue to help support your research.

    Yours sincerely,

Two points of interest in this, Firstly, it totaly ignores the six counties, with no mention of Belfast, Secondly, it funny how the British Library regards Dublin as still part of its remit.

There are lot of organisations that continue to operate between Ireland Britain. While it might suit some folks if all such connections were severed at independence, it would strike me as cutting off your nose to spite someone else's face. Canadians put up with this crap all the time from bodies that call themselves american this and that and operate in Canada.

There is of course, a simple reason why the British Library is involved in Dublin. Trinity College in Dublin has Legal Deposit Status under the British Legal Depositories Act. This means that TCD can receive a copy of every book published in the UK within a year of it first being published.

What you might be wondering is how a British law applies to sovereign Ireland. It is a historical tradition carried over since before independence. However, the Republic reciprocates, every book published in Ireland, under the Copyright Acts has to be deposited in most of Ireland's universities, plus a copy to the British Library.

The reason why the 6 counties are ignored is because Dublin was always the capital of Ireland and the British Act only gives books to one library in the four countries of the Union; Wales, Scotland, England (England is a little different, both Oxford and Cambridge get this status) and of course, Ireland.

Hope that clears things up for you, although I will agree that refering to Dublin as being part of the UK is a little strange!!

Great stuff, hopefully I'll make it along. Anyone who has used Dublin University's library will appreciate the value of strong links between the UK and Ireland in this area.

Wonder if there's many books on history, politics or geography in that library. If there are the staff obviously haven't read very many, if they think Ireland is still part of the UK.

I'd welcome this too. I may have difficuties with aspects of UK governance but I would not cut off my nose to spite my face.

Anything which has the capacity to raise the level of education in any sector of society is to be admired.

The same goes for the Open University in Ireland. Fantastic resource which I have availed of myself.
