Message on t-shirts worn by McDonalds staff. Are we racists?

I was in McDonalds today and all the staff (who seemed to be all foreign nationals) were wearing these black t-shirts with the following message on them:
"Yes I can speak English. Why is it fun to pretend to Management that I can't ?"

I'm torn between thinking this a good move by the Management to try and protect their staff from ignorant/racist customers and being slightly offended by this preachy message.

    Any thoughts?

I think they're funny, and make a good point, just like the tshirts I saw in a hardware store with YES I WORK HERE written on them.

I'd be far more worried about the tshirts I saw that say things like "I'm faster than the others", I dunno if it was McDonalds or another fast food joint I saw them in though.

YES I WORK HERE is different from YES I SPEAK ENGLISH tho.

They are trying to make a point but not in a jokey way but more of a preachy way i feel.

Bit preachy alright . If the management are aware that this petty behavior goes on then they should just take any complaints with a grain of salt and get on with it . The kind of langer who mocks foreign staff is probably just going to mock the t shirt too.

Ah, it's probably a bit of a laugh, and so long as staff aren't pressured or forced into them, I'd have no problem with it.

Oddly enough, a few months ago, a woman was hammered in the shop I work in. She knocked over a pasta sauce jar, and we asked her to leave. She started screaming at me "Fvck off back to Estonia". Weird.

Well yes, you do have that Estonian look about you.

Back in the day, the only T-shirts we wore were 'I'm lovin' It', which we were of course forced to wear.

I still don't get the point of the t-shirts in the opening post though..
Ireland interests are best secured within a more dynamic EU. Vote YES to Lisbon.

I find it a bit ironic really. They're trying to highlight the point that many people make assumptions about them without knowing all of the facts.....and how do they do it....by wearing an offensive T-shirt which makes assumptions about the reader without knowing all of the facts.

Surely the t-shirts are implying that McDonalds customers are "stupid and racist". Do no foreigners eat at McDonalds!

P.S. Any suggestions for t-shirts at Burgerking?
