    Rendition flights in Ireland?

There has been much of a kerfuffle over rendition flights refueling in shannon. But i want to know on what grounds could we board such planes and carry out searches for said renditioned passengers. I know that there is a treaty allowing US bordergaurds to operate on our soil, but could any clauses in that treaty limit our searching rights. If anyone knows the ins and outs could they explain. Could it be that we can't board these planes or are we adopting a see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil posture.

Not worth getting excited over. Amnesty International would do better putting pressure on the US to invade Zimbabwe except of course that would be seen as neo-colonialism which is so much worse than mass-murder.

    Here you go.

You will see there - among other things - the specific commitment in the Programme for Government to doing something about this scandal.

Well funnily enough Neo colonialism and mass murder often go together as in Iraq . And you would like to see an african Iraq by the sounds of it . Any thoughts on what should be done in Somalia or Sudan ? Or do you just take your lead from the Mugabe obsessed British news ?

The Amnesty initiative is reported on by Dan Buckley in the Examiner. What is the problem in dealing with this?

    Excerpt:

Government faces fierce criticism over US-led renditions
THE Government is expected to face fierce criticism from the United Nations next month over its suspected complicity with US rendition of prisoners through Shannon.

Two powerful human rights organisations have exposed Ireland’s see-no-evil attitude to the movement of illegally-held prisoners through the airport.

Ireland was yesterday accused by Amnesty International of inaction over US-led rendition and secret detention and the matter has been raised in a report to the UN by the Irish Human Rights Commission.

Concern has also been expressed by the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Government representatives are due to defend Ireland’s record on human rights when they address an oral hearing of the UN human rights committee in Geneva on July 14-15.

What I found most amazing was the statement from the Dept of Foreign Affairs as quoted in the RTE report yesterday; see here:

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the Government is completely opposed to the practice of the rendition of prisoners.
In a statement, it said no evidence has ever been produced that any person has ever been subject to extraordinary rendition through Ireland.
How could there be any evidence when the authorities never look for evidence, and actively hinder those upstanding citizens who try to gather evidence?

    What a disgrace!

Why does the Green Party go along with that carry-on? Why does anybody?

And not just the sheer immorality and deception over rendition flights... the ongoing cooperation with the Americans' illegal, vicious war-mongering in Iraq.

AI is obviously getting more and more desperate. Their now claiming that flights are landing in Ireland without any suspects but go on to transport the suspects long AFTER thet left Ireland or BEFORE they touched down here. Talk about a non-story.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.
