I agree it needs to be tackled. My mother informed me that my paternal aunt and her neighbours were all voting no. The main reason given was immigration and a concern that the Treaty would lead to it growing even more exponentially. I am not a racist but this is a small country and many of us feel lied to about this issue in Nice II.
Absurd. While the level of immigration is a concern for many, far too many people see its benefits aslo. You cannot blame people for seeking a better life. The Irish, due to historical circumstances, have had to do likewise for generations. Instead we should have put policies in place that would have created a fair playing field for old and new workers to create better lives for all. Xenophobia has not place in this debate. No place at all.

alotof people i know who voted no did so because of the way the government has handled mass immigration into this country and the possibility that a yes vote could eventually lead to a bigger flood of immigrants into our country.
Yes talking to people that was one of the main reasons they were voting no and im from killarney in co kerry where its flooded with immigrants. It was never really brought up in the coverage but the mass immigration was a big concern.

Idiots--and if you call me names I can certainly reciprocate-- like you think that the only way to show you're not xenophobic is to support permitting the entire world to live in Ireland.
Do you hate Ireland? If not, why do you want it to cease being the national homeland of the Irish people?
Yes the people were sold a pup on Nice I/II and the whole immigration situation was allowed to run wild because it suited one section of the community only - the employers. If our government didn't opt out of every worker's entitlement clause in such treaties, a more level playing field might have benefited all workers. The level of immigration might have been lower and all of us might have had an increased standard of living. However, how can an Irish person blame a "foreign" worker for this situation? Most of our families in the past had some experience of emmigration. The problem is not with workers but with those who wish to exploit them. And as a part of Europe, we have to expect to have a certain level of immigration. Many of our own people enjoy the same priviledges in other EU countires. It's a two way street.Originally Posted by elfatih

Absolutely correct. Nor with economics, etc.Originally Posted by aggressivesecularist

Lisbon might not have anything to do with immigration...
But the way many people voted most definitely had a lot to do with immigration. Anyone denying that is whistling past the graveyard. That isn't a racist comment. It's a realistic comment.
While the economy continues its downward spiral, the issue of immigration will come closer and closer to the surface. It rarely is an issue when times are good.. It becomes a serious issue for many when times are bad
