it looks pretty good and with an english director its a lot more likely to be a good portrayal of the events than if an Irish one handled it in the usual mawkish fashion . Interesting to note the small bit which showed the violence of the screws and then the screw sitting eating his sandwiches afterwards traumatised at his own actions . This is a very accurate insight into the effects of what they were ordered to do had on them - many committed suicide with their personal protection weapons and suffered other ailments like alcoholism and depression . Their home environments must have been like warzones .Originally Posted by alexo
For example in the regime in Maghaberry today they do not officially carry out strip searches , they make you keep your clothes on but remove clothing items one at a time and then put them back on . This is because theyve realised the psychological trauma involved in dominating and engaging physically with a naked man on a regular basis can have on the scews . If you were to remove your clothes during a strip search theyd put you on the punishment block . Some prisoners where aware of this effect and would instantly remove their clothes and run to the wash basin the second they heard the clatter of boots on the wing causing the screws to crack up when they burst into the cells , it enraged them because they knew it was doing them harm from their own training and experiance .
A close relative of mine was on the dirty protest in maghaberry a few years back and was aware of one screw in particular who went out of his way to torture the prisoners and behave as brutally as possible and make life as difficult as possible . He was constantly at the cell doors turning lights on in the middle of the night and all the rest . He wasnt surprised at all to lern that one day the screw just turned around and killed himself . A lesson to all would be tormentors who take the job of implementing British criminalisation policies against Irish insurgents . Its yourself who ends up suffering a possibly worse torture . What was done to those men in HB locks , most only boys , was absolutely obscene and the effects of hungerstrikes on everyone involved were extremely deep and far reaching .

Lets hope this movie will bring about a new form of Irish nationalism, one which will make the people stand up for themselves and say "no more".

if it prevents the likes of martin mcguinness doing Maggie Thatcher impressions by going on the telvision and radio calling Irish republicans criminals it wont be a bad thing either . Criminalisation of republican seperatism and political prisoners is as wrong in 2008 as it was in 1981 .

The film looks great. Anybody know of a release date for it? I'm sure it'll be on limited release but I'll make my way to see it somewhere.
Autumn
That long? That's a bit disappointing.
Im looking forward to this too.
There's been some good Irish history fils in recent times, and as there is usually a time lag between wars and Hollywood getting involved, I can see a few more coming out about the troubles in future years.
Just thinking, the construction of the GFA is ripe for a movie - think of the tense discussions, the behind the scenes malarkey, it would make a great film.
For a tele play maybe, but I couldn't imagine having David Trimble portrayed on the silver screen would be great cinema.
Please don't jump down my throat here but I am not entirely sure if this film is needed. We had Some Mother's son in 1996, H3 in about 2003, do we really need another one now? At least if they were going to do another film, they should have based it on Joe McDonnell, or even one of the INLA hunger strikers. Mickey Devine's story would be particularly profound from a film-making point of view. It might also stop knobs like the Daily Star referring to 'IRA hunger strikes'. If it's based around Sands, it seems to be the same old same old. A lot of the scenes in those trailers were very like H3. Where's the new angle?
