Summary points from the latest CSO estimates on population and migration.
The April 2005 population is the highest since the census of 1861
when the census for that year recorded a population of 4.4 million.
The excess of births over deaths has more than doubled from 16,600 in
the twelve-month period ending April 1994 to 33,500 in the corresponding
period to April 2005.
Over a third of immigrants (38 per cent) were nationals of the 10 new
EU accession states,which joined the EUon 1May 2004 .
17 per cent of immigrants are from Poland while 9 per cent are from
Lithuania.
Emigration is at its lowest level (16,600) since the series began in 1987.
45 per cent of emigrants went to countries other than the EU and the
USA, while nearly one quarter (24 per cent) of all immigrants originated
from outside the EU and USA.
The age profile of emigrants was younger than that for immigrants.
Half of all emigrants were aged 15-24 years, while just over half (54
per cent) of all immigrants were aged 25-44 years
