    McDowell's sense of priorities

Reacting to the weekend events, guess who McDowell focuses on?

Has he taken leave of his senses? Surely he should be lobbying for the protection of the nationalist community and not berating it.

Yes, of course he should. But this man has got things so screwed up he does not know whether he is coming or going. By not taking the loyalists to task he is condoning their apalling violence.

A new low. But then again, that is the unionist way...

His appeals to Republicans to reach out are fine, i have no problem with that per se and would be strong advocate of that myself. But his tone seems to be inferring that Republicans are somehow to blame for the riots.

McDowell knows well that the only way his party will survive in the future is if they remain in coalition with Fianna Fáil, the PDs would not survive as an opposition party considering they have less than 2% support of the Irish people as a whole. To ensure his party remains in government he will attempt to nullify any possibility of a Sinn Féin coalition by demonising them in the eyes of the southern electorate, implicitly linking Republicans to the recent riots is an effort to implant a "sure they're all mad up there" mentality in people which he thinks will lessen the desire to have Sinn Féin in government.

Mc Dowell's priority in that article seems to be peace with unionists, thats seems commendable.

But of course they're to blame. Deliberately building their houses along parade routes, putting themselves in the way of petrol bombs, making a song and dance about a few innocent mob beatings and burnings, etc, etc. If that isn't clear and blatant provocation I don't know what is. Is it any wonder that the loyalist community has at last responded to such antagonism?

Progressive Democrats president Mr McDowell, who took part in recent power-sharing talks, said the British and Irish Governments had made every possible effort to include every shade of opinion in the political process in Northern Ireland.
Aodh_Rua won't be happy about this
