On the specific campaign, there's not much to say other than good. It's a shame that this doesn't seem to have been taken that seriously by the Department of Education (I'm open to correction on this), which seems to prefer to concentrate on 'bullying' rather than specific types of bullying. Admittedly they're in a bit of a bind, given that its likely that an official campaign to protect LGB students would probably run up against the opposition of nutters in the parents' organisations (you're putting ideas into their heads, what about moral values etc etc).

I don't know that much about the USS, though, except for the publicity they generated when they were established. Would they have the capacity or the resources to do this properly?

    Yeah, good luck with that.

This is the Union of Secondary Students, yes? Representing secondary students, almost all of whom are under the age of 17, yes? Would it not be legitimate to refer to those who sleep with LG students under that age as paedophiles, as they are such under the law?
Anyhow, can I ask if you know what practically will this initiative do to address the undoubted issue of suicide among young gay men?
Please sign the petition to establish a national day of celebration in honour of the vision of the United Irishmen!

Are they saying that it is acceptable to have Homosexual relations with minors?
I got a sex education class in school at the age of 13. Does that mean the teacher was a paedophile?

No, they're not. AFAIK Paedophilia isn't defined under the law. Also, it's possible to be gay, and even be in a relationship without actually having sex. There's no need to raise the issue of paedophila exclusively in relation to gay students. The same thing could equally be said about a 17-year old 'Rock boy who gets his mickey sucked by a 16-year old Loretto girl around the back of the Wesley disco. It's far more important to educate young people to make informed decisions about sex and sexual experimentation that it is to throw the legalities around.

Its the technical term for "the love that dare not speak it's name". But the Uncle/Bob analogy works best.

This is the last time I will even acknowledge the paedophilia reference in this thread, this is nothing to do with anybody sleeping with anybody it is about people being bullied because they are different maybe gay maybe perceived to be gay or have "unnaceptable characteristics" - I would presume that this initiative might help to tackle the causes of suicide in young men

Well, it's the 'relations' bit that it's a little odd. The point is important though. JCSkinner seems to jump on the 'gay' angle and immediately bring up the issue of sex (i.e. relations, I suppose) when this really isn't about sex at all.

Aha, I should have said "are they saying its acceptable to have homosexual sex with minors".
