Okay, everyone clearly has their PC po-faces on today. As MN had raised the spectre of such a discussion, I thought I'd get it out of the way ironically. Clearly didn't work, so let's move on.
Now, could MN or someone else answer my legitimate question in relation to what the ************************ is another BS initiative going to do about the tidal wave of young gay men, especially those of school attending age, who are killing themselves?

It's a fair point, but I wouldn't necessarily criticise the USS over this. I don't know the details of what they're planning, but I doubt if it'd be that extensive (could be wrong, but do they have the resources to do it properly). A possible reason that serious action isn't taken on this is precisely because of the likely reaction of a hardcore of (non-ironic) nutjobs.

What do you think should be done?

For starters, a dedicated helpline would be useful. Properly trained counsellors available in all school districts which could be accessed through a teacher's confidential reference.
But to be honest, I think the answers to this one are going to have to come from within the gay community. Only those who went through the process of coming out, found it difficult and considered a rash response but managed to survive, actually know what would best help in the circumstances.

I think that's true, to an extent, although it's important that it wouldn't become an initiative where it's just gay people talking to themselves. It's also important to tackle the bullying, rather than just trying to minimise its effect, so additional resources and skills would be required, which wouldn't necessarily have to come from within the gay community.

The dedicated helpline and the trained counsellors would probably be useful. Again, though, unless leaders in education are willing to stand up against those who'll scream 'paedophile' at the first mention of the existence of homosexuality in school, I can't see the resources for it coming through.

You presume though JC Skinner that this just affects the gay community - not all people who are the victims of homophobic bullying are actually gay.

You are right to an extent though - the NLGF and Dublin lesbian line submitted some stuff to the 1996 taskforce on suicide which was completely ignored

As I recall, it was the only such submission not credited in the report?
