So you would have us forget about commemorating events such as 1916, and we might as well just put all our nations history in the dustbin incase it produces some Nationalist sentiments among our people. What a cold, souless, devoid of any memory of our forefathers country you'd have us living in.

The English are gone but not forgotten.

I don't believe the Tragedy of the Famine should be hijacked to stoke anti British sentiment, nor to feed our youth on the nutrient free bread of blind partisan Nationalism, and less still that it should be used by ruthless politicians, as a veil to screen their real activities. We should instead seek to understand ou past from all its perspectives, and enrich our understanding and judgement in doing so. All who were responsible for the Famine are beyond accountability, and any just retribution.

There are those amoung us who have used the Famine event to gather patriotic passionate youth to their banner. Those indeed who had themselves banqueted on the same nutrient free diet in their own youth, motivated to sacrifice the blood, of their fellow man, woman, and child, on what they believed was the Altar of Irish Freedom.
Fianna Fail will allow the Irish People, to me milked like Milch Cows, by the CIF through high house prices, rents, and land prices, at the expense of competitiveness, and quality of life. FF+CIF=1

This has been discussed to death before, Pax.

Please explain why the British Empire was any worse than, for example, the Spanish, French, German, or for that matter Belgian Empires.

All large Western European nations had an Empire in the 19th century.

    Why not answer the question?
Because I am over the age of 5 and can't quite comprehend the childish mindset that would ask such an idiotic twit of a question. It is beneath my dignity to addresses either you or it with anything but scorn. This is a big peoples website, or at least it says so on the tin.

I never said they didn't have an empire. As I pointed out on other threads about the famine, other European nations prevented famines in areas of their control. In contrast, Britain continued to persist in pushing liberal economics upon her colonial subjects, knowing full well the consequences...and importantly, the benefits.

    Did they?

So British colonial rule was more brutal than that of the Belgians in the Congo, more genocidal thn the Germans in South West Africa, for example?

And wasn't slavery abolished earlier in the British Empire than in other comparable Empires?

Your answer is far from mature.

It would appear you align yourself strongly with the St333ve, Joel and Cael school of 'thought' on this site.

I strongly suggest following your own counsel as you clearly don't belong with 'the big boys'.

Again where did I say it was less brutal than in those instances? Sure in it's entirety the British Empire was responsible for much more genocidal killing, but afaia the Congo was a worse instance of colonial brutality. And slavery continued and was expanded under the British coolie system.

Anyway we're specifically talking about holocausts through unnecessary famine. In that respect, the British Empire was on a pedestal of their very own.

It reads one thing and then it replies to something else entirely from its own head. It really is the worst poster this board has ever seen.

"Hey, a million and a half may have starved under the jurisdiction of what was the most powerful country in the world at the time but what about those bloody Flemish, eh? You never thought of them did you? Bet you're sickened into silence about the whole thing now and overawed once again at my mighty intellect. I know I am".

The mindset of these creatures. The incomprehensible mindset.
