"Govt parties at odds over new disclosure rules"

New legislation that means Public Reps can keep more of the shares and gifts secret from public scrutiny is causing a rift between the coalition partners

    from breakingnews.ie

New draft legislation that would effectively hide aspects of politicians' financial dealings from public scrutiny is threatening to cause a rift between the Government partners.

The Green Party says it is not enthusiastic about a proposed bill that would allow politicians greater secrecy around the acceptance of gifts and the declaration of shares.

Politicians currently have to declare gifts worth €650 or more and shares worth €13,000 or more, but these figures could increase to €2,000 and €20,000 under the proposed legislation.

Speaking in Dublin today, Green Senator Dan Boyle said his party was in favour of maximum disclosure with the lowest thresholds possible.
Fianna Fail want to raise the threshold. The Greens want maximum disclosure. That's good, but begs the question: based on their past form, - how long before the Greens cave in?

Nobody plays a blind bit of difference anyway. Fianna Fails recently released SIPO list was full to the gills with a who's who of the property industry in Ireland. Not to mention the various other vested interests... bookies, publicans, tax launderers, motor industry, etc.

This is the ultimate hypocrisy from a party that criticises Libertas over non-disclosure to the public of its donors.

What's the argument in favour of increasing the disclosure limits at all? I can't think of any, other than to hide donations from the public and from the revenue.
