    Bertie Ahern, accountant.

He trotted it out again on radio today and was not challenged. He might have worked in accounts in the Mater or somewhere , but he is not qualified as an accountant. Why do you think he's allowed get away with it ?

He gets away with lots. What he said was something along the lines of "as a qualified accountant and being good with numbers i could tell that if we got a 5% swing we would take 2 seats in my area".

If only the moron could apply this same knowledge of maths to the 30k that he seems to not remember about.

I feel the same about the way Libertas' claim to be a think tank is taken at face value and reported as fact.

Well, if you want a very academic answer, you could argue and some academic studies have shown that in the eyes of the public it is not as easily delineated a profession as the Law or Medicine, where the division of roles is more pronounced. In accountancy, especially in the past, the titles of accounts clerk, accounts assistant, accountant, financial advisor, taxation advisior were used interchangeably.

Bertie Ahern was an accounts clerk in the Mater hospital. He has stated in interviews (including one with Magill a few years ago, Andrew Lynch?) that there was an offer of, or at least the prospect of, a promotion when he left to enter full time politics (now the poor divil only earns €300,000/year!). So, to be fair, we can make a safe presumption he would be a qualified accountant if he had continued on his original career path.

Qualified or unqualified, he doesn't have much of a grasp of his own accounts

The reason we have to tolerate this type of gombeenism is down to the media, the spend on the 2009 local elections is already concentrating minds.
    Thank God for the internet.

Would a "Libertas thick tank" make you fell any better?

Ah, would ye g'way a that. "Accounts clerk" me hole, he counted the cars in the carpark!

Everything about Ahern is a lie. It really is that simple.

I just don't understand the hypnotic power he seems to have over so many people. He's a liar, a crook, a thief and a mafioso thug, but for some insane reason a large chunk of Irish society don't want to face the truth and instead babble mindlessly about "Ah poor Bertie, would ye leave poor Bertie alone".

He also said in that interview "all my friends I've had since childhood or my early years in politics". Does that mean Bertie ain't friends with (multi-multi-millionaire property developer and beneficiary of FF policies) Sean Dunne who accompanied him to Westminister and Washington? I can't imagine Bert knowing Dunne 20-30 years ago.

Also Bert said he was busy doing the Budgets as minister of Finanace in early nights, so he was capable of managing the nations finances in a relativly clear orthodox manner but not his own.

Sean O 'Rourke went very easy on Bert today as have rest of RTE all week.
Matt Cooper had a good article in Sunday Times about Bert today.

On a side note saw Bert's police driver sitting in the massive Ministerial Mercedes outside Beaumont house last night reading his paper. Obviously not too concerned about Berts safety. What was all that nonsense about safety over last few years. If anyone wanted to do him harm they need only stroll into his two favorite pubs on the nights he is regularly there . Never a change of timing or location so I don't think theres ever been a serious threat to him. Suprising considering the rogue elements in the Northern issue but anyhow.

Sw, Totally agree with you, he counted the cars in the car-park and when completed was sent back out to check the figures, only way they could shut him up and keeping from jumping into the middle of wage negotiations.
He can tell lies to you looking you straight in the face smiling at you and minutes later tell another fella a different sent of lies leading to confusion all round leaving people to think only he can solve it, as only he knows all the lies, If he gets flummoxed - he can cry at will, problem now is though - Mahon aint buying it.
