Well, if you want to point out those who seem unable to get to grips with 'reality', you may wish to note that Catalpa still hasn't explained why the figures cited are, in his words, 'garbage'.Originally Posted by sackville

Catalpa, you still haven't explained why they're 'garbage'. Is it because you're too stupid, or too afraid?Originally Posted by Catalpa

wonder how close they've got to dealing with it allIt emerged that some unscrupulous language schools were providing students with false attendance records necessary for the renewal of residence permits, with some estimates putting the price of such records at anywhere between $830 and $1,660.
Others were abusing the visa system to attract individuals to the country, ostensibly as students, who were in fact only coming to work.....![]()

If you're referring to me, I think that it's quite possible that a large number of the Chinese people in this jurisdiction are here on something other than work permits. I think that the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment figures are more than likely accurate and I don't see any reason to believe that they're 'garbage'.Originally Posted by wizzard

How would it be an education for 'liberals'? I thought The Guardian was supposed to be a liberal paper in the first place.Originally Posted by sackville

Wasn't there an issue relating to Chinese students a couple of years ago whereby a person in Foreign Affairs was charged or convicted of effectively selling visas so that they could come here and attend fictional language classes?
At the time, I remember hearing that there was nothing could be done about those who had entered this way, because it was unknown who they were among the legitimate students, but that monitoring of language school registers would root them out.
Then, as usual, nothing.

I looked into that at the start of the year, and it seemed to me that it doesn't really tighten things up at all. Obviously, the legislation now requires that the courses students attend are of a certain level and number of hours per week, which one would have though was an obvious requirement anyway.
After all, what legitimate student would travel all the way to expensive Ireland to learn English for only two or three hours a week?
They still aren't monitoring the registers, but merely accepting and checking the paper roll calls, which could obviously be faked. All this legislation does is cut back on the number of full-time EFL jobs, as many teachers complained earlier in the year.
