    Catholic Schools = Catholic Ethos

    Pidge, you've said this before.

however, you appear to go to a special school. I've asked others. Their children are still being taught catholicism in schools... and it appears the bishop guy wants it to get even more catholic.
Please, be specific! I know people from Blackrock College (where I go), St. Michaels, Clongowes, Glenstal Abbey, CBC (Monkstown and Cork) and loads more that I cant think of. Which radically catholic school is this?
In a previous thread, you said something different - that your allegations were based on people of the previous generations experience.
If schools were preaching against homosexuality or other religions, it would be illegal as far as I know.

    Catholic Schools = Catholic Ethos

But Catholic education has never done anything bad to anybody!
If parents want their children to go to a Catholic school, let them do! What's wrong about it?

And because catholicism claims a place in international and domestic politics, as well as day to day life in this country, I feel it is as open to criticism as any other political group.
There's a difference between critism and insults, flakie!

My argument is that many of these people would call themselves catholic, but ... really... aren't
    I would agree.
Indeed I have heard that many parents who are agnostic are forced to get their children baptised as Catholics so they can be recieve primary education locally.

What do you mean by this? Provide examples of this, and furthermore, to the best of your knowledge, is this done with the consent of the parent? Also, if the parent wishes for that child not to be 'taught' catholicism, what happens?

The waiting lists at multi-d schools would dispute the comment that people are happy sending their children to catholic schools.

You claime to support secular schooling, but seem to support mulit-denominational schooling in this post, and elsewhere. Is that not contradictory?

Exactly, a school cant discriminate on religion - its illegal.
Christ, so many peoples complaints with CAtholic schools seem to be based in the 60s...

They theoritically can. But there is no reported cases, as far as I am aware, of a local primary school, which is the sole provider of education locally, ever refusing education to non-believers.

I think only teachers have to have a religious denomination to teach in Catholic /Protestant schools, pupils not nessasarily.
We had a bunch of Russian Orthodox pupils in our Catholic school and that was absolutely no problem.

That is generally true. Most denominational schools have a mission statement about their ethos and their desire to uphold this. For instance in a catholic run school it would be advantageous to be a catholic teacher when applying for a job. However the vocational schools cannot protect an ethos as they are in theory non-denominational. JJ Carroll and Pidge have both made excellent points about how religious minorities are the strongest proponents of our education system.

Nope it's being resigned to what is available.

As far as I'm aware there are no choices for non-religious schooling. Therefore my kids will go to the nearest alternative which is the popular multi-d school.

Pidge, I asked a couple people casually (after our last conversation), I didn't grill them for the teacher's middle names. But they said yes, the catechism is taught in schools and they prepare for their first communion and confirmation in school as well.
