    Catholic Schools = Catholic Ethos

the thing is, this thread is about people unfairly being stuck sending their kids to exclusionist schools.

As far as I know, nobody is forced to go to muslim schools in Ireland. Talk about dodging the issue.

Every child should have the right to an appropriate education that does not villify them or their families. This right is not observed here, obviously.
In fairness, I don't know about many other people here but I went to a Catholic school and more often than not our RE class consisted of a movie or else we were left do our homework. Only in Transition Year, really, was RE taken seriously and we studied not only Catholicism but about other religions and cultures too. We also studied about non-religious topics such as the world of work. I must have went to a very weird catholic school.

Considering I still remained on school grounds then I didn't break any rules per se. As for Irish, considering it is a compulsory subject that does not infringe on my beliefs, and its teaching does not undermine a healthy debate about an important topic, why would I skip it?
There should have been a free class for does that didn't want a Catholic education. That's the least I expect from a school that receives public funding. [/quote:29u3lzm0]

But the school also receives Catholic Church funding. Don't forget were it not for the Catholic Church most working class children in Ireland would never hove been educated.

Listen, what you are told in Religion class, which in fairness is normally only one hour per week is no more damaging to you than what you hear Economics or Physics or any other subject.

Sit in class, Listen to what they have to say, asks question if you want and when you are an adult you have the right to take it or leave it.

I still go to a Catholic school. I once skipped a few religion classes and was promptly told that if I didn't go to Religion, I would be kicked out of school. I was told [exact words] 'if ytou don't like it, go somewhere else'.
    pah, you know what?
A teacher told me exactly the same because I skipped many chemistery lessons, (once I had only 12% presence! *gg*)!
That has nothing to do with religion, you mustn't skip any lesson at school!

As far as I know, Science is the only course at Junior Cert that you get marks for telling blatant lies.

You've been blasting me long enough, you should at LEAST be able to spell my name.

The state has a responsibility to provide schooling to all citizens, not just one particular group.

The state should drop funding from all religious based schools, and only fund secular schooling.

That way, if parents are too lazy to teach their own kids about faith, they can pay to send their kids to an indoctrination camp. Otherwise, everyone else can be left alone.

True. As for having to believe the Aussumptions underlining the Laws of Demand... I'd belive the Assumptions of Our Lady first..

Something which would probably cost this state tens of billions, and to which there is no obvious sign of public support,.

Well, the archbishop seems to think that people don't want real catholic teaching in schools.

I know plenty of people who hate the fact that their kids have to go to catholic school, but they have no other choice, nor do they have money to build a school.

Pull or reduce funding of third level (it's not really free anyway) until they can sort out basic schooling properly first.
