    Catholic Schools = Catholic Ethos

Christ, so many peoples complaints with CAtholic schools seem to be based in the 60s...
Most of the people I know who tell me horror stories about catholic schooling were schooled in the 80s and 90s.

Being shaken by the ears until you could recite whatever piece of catechism you hadn't remembered... sounds like fun. [/quote:25nn2mae]
Fine, 80s or 90s. That does not happen anymore. One bit of even anecdotal evidence. You're complaining about something that doesnt happen!?!

Well as somebody educated in both a Catholic primary and secondary school from 1987 to 2001, I certainly have no horror stories such as the above to tell. I was never shaken by the ears and was never taught about the catechism. If there ever was physical abuse (and you are suggesting it is widespread), then I'd imagine the law would have to get involved. That is not tolerated in schools these days. Our education system is one of the best in Europe and is certainly not the backward system that you make it out to be.

    Catholic Schools = Catholic Ethos

From 1988 to 2001, I was educated in a wide variety of schools; two national schools, one gaelscoil, and one community school, and never say any physical or verbal violence assoicated with the teaching of religion

    Catholic Schools = Catholic Ethos

What parents need to do is stop whining that the catholic church teaches catholicism to their children. They need to tell the government to stop funding catholic (ie exlusionist) schools with the general taxpayer's money.

If the schools want to be really catholic, and pander only to super religious backwards maniacs, they should do so but NOT WITH MY MONEY.

I don't know why people here keep expecting the catholic church to change with the times. Surely people have copped that the catholic church doesn't care one little bit about reality and that if you don't like it, you should find another faith. You don't have to be catholic to be Irish -- you don't.

They need to start a twelve step program for the Irish who define themselves as catholic despite not believing the vast majority of catholic doctrine.
Yep I agree with this especially the last sentence.

If parents decide to send their children to a Catholic school then that is up to them. I certainly don't feel that children should be forced to go to state schools. I think we would be better off discussing the threats that a certain other religion poses to civilisation as we know it, but that probably wouldn't be very politically correct.
Has it escaped your attention that the Christian fundies that control the White House have more nukes than anyone?? Islamic fundamentalism is a threat yes, but stating that a "certain other religion" poses a "threat to civilisation as we know it" is bordering on race hate. Go off and refight the crusades if you want, just don't expect the rest of us to be interested.

Of course not the ones that stole the 2000 election are though, or a lot of them are anyway.

Ok, so you think all Republicans are Christian fundamentalists?

No, but the Christian fundamentalist movement has got the Republican party in a tight grip. I recommend that you read "Nixon off the Record" - a book by his secretary Monica Crowley. Richard Nixon had some interesting insights on the takeover of his party by fundamentalists, which he was opposed to.

Also I recommend that you read "American Dynasty" by Kevin Phillips who is a former long time republican but left the party after becoming unhappy about its direction. It contains a detailed analysis of the rise of the religious right in America.

Also did it ever occur to you why Ronald Reagan's son is not a republican? Answer, because he was not happy at the religious right's influence on his father's party.

Hope that answers your question, and I do genuinely recommend that you check out the above references.
