Harris: Fall of Ahern like fall of Parnell

Senator Eoghan Harris, a distinguished senator (*Ok Don't laugh*) claimed on RTE on Thursday morning that the fall of Ahern was like the fall of Parnell, with a popular leader driven from office by a mob and media-hyped outrage.

Was he right? Or was it just the usual Harris over-exaggeration (ie, a Harrisism!)?

You cannot use the words "Eoghan Harris" and "right" in one sentence unless its "Eoghan Harris is a right gobshi**!!"

No, useless drivel again, trying to create some type of legend status with Bertie, he should just do us a favour and create some type of Bertie blow up doll

    then take it home....

I knew someone would make that comparison eventually. Parnell and Ahern. Ironically they both had experiences with Tribunals. Only the outcome was dramatically different. In 1882 Parnell was exhonerated by a tribunal, called the Parnell Commission, of slanderous allegations by the London Times.

All this talk about a media mob is rubbish and bluster but Senator Harris knows exactly what he is doing. He understands that a political shock like this creates a huge opening for immediate and emotional analysis. That is why he obviously accepted literally every invitation extended to him from the media today. Many people will have felt sorry for Bertie today and those are the people Senator Harris was speaking to. He doesn't give a toss what nerds like us think.

Just one small point and I know you as a student of journalism would always strive for accuracy……..sorry, excuse me, I was choking there for a second, but the tribunal Bertie is involved with hasn’t reported yet, so to say that the outcome was “dramatically different” might, in some quarters, be considered a bit previous.

yeah, my point still stands, Parnell's career went from strength to strength following his appearances before a Tribunal, now you could hardly say the same thing about Bertie, could you?
