Brazilian outrage at 'racist' Irish.

Apart from a few inches in Saturday's Irish Times, this story has attracted little coverage in the Irish media. However, it has caused fury in Brazil with outraged phone calls, death threats and hoax bomb alerts to the Irish embassy.

Brazilians Denounce Irish Discrimination

Brasilia, Mar 26 (Prensa Latina) Three Brazilian university students denounced being mistreated by immigration authorities in Ireland, saying that instead of enjoying a week-long holiday, they were imprisoned for 40 hours in the European country.

They are Andre Sao Pedro (22) and Maria Dias (24), both from Bahia, and Thais Tibirica (24), from Sao Paulo, who were attending exchange courses in Portugal and decided to use their recess to know Ireland, where they were detained.

They were refused entry by Dublin authorities on the grounds that they had "insufficient money" to stay for seven days in the country, despite each of them had $350 in cash and credit cards worth over 3,000 euros, they told journalists.

They were first held at the airport for four hours and then sent to a prison, where they shared cells with ordinary prisoners, said Thais, who described the action as discriminatory "because Andre is black and Maria is also dark-skinned."

The case was confirmed to Folha by the Brazilian Embassy in Dublin, and the Brazilian Foreign Ministry said to have received complaints by another Brazilian student aged 18 who tried to visit Ireland and was also held in prison for 10 hours.

Describing Irish immigration's behavior as inadequate and unacceptable, the Brazilian Foreign Ministry demanded a detailed investigation by the embassy, noting that 115 Brazilians were expelled from Ireland last year and another 57 have been expelled so far in 2008.

Culturally, Brazil does not tolerate racism at any level in society.
Economically, Brazil recently overtook China.
Politically, we need to sort this out quickly.

They should have said they were seeking asylum. They would have not had any problems then.

What's to investigate? Before you travel to any foreign country you make sure you are able to go there and you have any necessary visas. You don't just turn up at the immigration desk in one of Ireland's airports. If I was to go to Brazil on holiday I wouldn't just arrive there without checking I had the proper visas and travel documents required

Or that they were going to be circumcised in Brazil.

I agree 100%.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

Brazilians don't need a visa to enter Ireland. They had their passport - it was all they needed.

Absolutely agree with that - we have had very good relations with Brazil and these needs to be addressed quickly - Brazil is one of the coming nations in this new century.

Big Deal

SO WHAT ?

3 people being refused entry to a country and people demanding we do something !!!!!!

On that basis we should break relations with the US as they refuse entry to Irish passport holders, hold them in detention centres before kicking them out of the country.

Its a NON issue.
