    Drug Dealers? The IRA?

    http://www.ireland.com/newspaper/ire...RUGSCHIEF.html

    IRA Drugs Link Doubted

    Conor Lally

The head of the Garda National Drugs Unit, Det Chief Supt
Cormac Gordon has said there is no evidence to suggestparamilitary figures are involved in drug dealing.

He said while there may be fears that some paramilitaries
will turn to drug dealing now that the Provisional IRA has
been stood down, there was no intelligence at present to
    suggest this was happening.
When I read this article I thought about the ones who have called the IRA worthless drug dealers. Yes the very ones who applaud the efforts of the police no matter what the circumstance. Well here it is... straight from the horses mouth!

This allegation was always farcical, given the work that republicans have done in the fight against drugs. Our opponents wish to paint us as the bad guys in every situation, so they will cover up the flaws in their analysis.

I'd take with a grain of salt anything those securocrats in the Garda National Drugs Unit say.

If the Gardai had evidence that paramilitaries were involved in drugs do you think they'd sit on it? I'm sure most republicans were aware before they read this article that this was the case - it's just a handy way to convince the blueshirts that republicans aren't involved in drugs.

Well considering I'm someone who accepts the authority of the Gardaí as the legitimate police force of this state have you any reason to believe I wouldn't?

Although not directed at me I'm going to answer as well

The IRA are not and never have been involved in drug dealing - I don't need the Garda to tell me that. So personally speaking their opinion on this matter makes no difference to me whatsoever. On the other hand, I'd be interested to hear your opinion on this. Do you accept the Gardaí analysis on this, JJ?

The Garda report seems to be correct, as usual. The only Shinners / IRA to associate with drug dealers ( and what drug dealers they are ) are the bird watchers. One of these bird watchers, on his modest income, reportedly went on his last bird watching holiday in a first class Air France seat costing 6000 euro. The white dust must have fogged up the binoculars because they never found out anything about the birds. The only bird it seems they ended up meeting was ....guess who.... the good old reliable, who else but...Charlie Bird.
Back to the subject, the Garda report was right.

I cannot see any reason to doubt the analysis presented.
