The end of white migration to Ireland?

Catalpa and Co, rejoice! According to the last White paper commissioned by the Chancellery of the Goverment of Lithuania the number of emigrating and immigrating Lithuanians is "effectively the same" as of 4th quarter of 2007. As economic situation in all CEE countries (bar Romania and Bulgaria) is roughly the same it is only fair to extrapolate the same findings to all CEE countries. This means this year will be a break-even year, and starting next year net inflow of CEE nationals to Ireland, UK etc will become negative. Surely, great news for all of us, isn't it?

p.s. But who will fix Catalpa's loo in 5 years' time, when the last Polish plumber goes?

The Paper was commissioned to assess the impact of emigration on Lithuanian economy. The main conclusion was that it had generally a positive effect on economy. The findings were the following:

1) the problem of unemployment (some of it hidden) was solved as there was a huge overhang of idle workforce in the aftermath of Russian crisis in 1998
2) net transfers from abroad to Lithuania were estimated (very speculatively) to the tune of 1.5-1.7 bn euros

The reason for return of emigrants is simple. The economy is booming by growing some 7-8% per year, salaries are growing 20-30% per year (although from a low base, currently 600 euros), and the major factor - majority of emigrants in western Europe are over-qualified for the jobs they do. It is not unusual that someone with a lawyer's diploma works as a secretary, and qualified carpenter picks strawberries in Ireland. Those people are clearly frustrated by the quality of jobs they do and the only chance to make career - is to go home. So when salaries rise enough - majority will leave without second thoughts.
