Well well well...

No less a personage that out illustrious Taoiseach agrees with Catapla's analysis:

Ahern predicts long-term Polish presence

Bertie Ahern has predicted that Ireland will have a substantial Polish population over the long term

Though I notice that:

30% of all hurleys are now made in Poland - this surprising fact reflected in a gift of a framed camán to the Taoiseach from Prime Minster Tusk, a sign of the growing links between Ireland and the country of 40m people.

That'll be the same Bertie Ahern who can't tell the difference between a gift and a loan and who was apparently unaware that his girlfriend had received £30,000 from a bank account controlled by one of his best friends.

Since when has that gobsh*te been an expert demographer?
'It would actually give me the greatest of pleasure watching non-compliant taxpayers going to jail. That's the kind of person I am.' Bertie Ahern, 1993.

just because it was Bertie doesn't make it neccesarily wrong. I read an article last week by John Waters that wasn't horse siucra. Does this relate to the thousandth chimpanzee typing Hamlet theory?

If it wasn't for migration from the east, Ireland would still be inhabited by the great elk and the wolf.

There was a community of "Flemings" who lived in Kilkenny in the 17th century as a distinct migrant group. Now there is no separate group and Fleming is just another local surname.

That's true but there again we didn't see 200,000 arrive each year either...

Actually the Irish elk died out because Ireland's climate got wetter, which lead to the regeneration of the forests. The elk lived on open grassland and could not move between the trees in the forest without great difficulty (due to it's antlers).
