Cllr John Halligan resigns from Workers Party

Waterford City Councillor John Halligan, and party Vice-President, has resigned from the Workers Party. John Halligan was requested by registered post this week, to resign his seat on the City Council and hand it over to another member of the workers party.
Problems arose for the Councillor when he expressed his wish to vote for local authority service charges which the Workers’ Party has long opposed as a form of double taxation. Workers Party Councillor Davy Walsh says he will continue to stand by party policy.

He resigned his elected seat or just his position on the council which was one of his duties?

Fair play to John.As I understand it he didn't want to be automatically opposing the City Councils estimates while seeking finance for various projects.

I must say that I'm deeply shocked. The WP still had a councillor?

Waterford is their last stronghold -they have a fair amount of support here. Its hard to see what place the party has in Ireland 2008.

It's hard to see what place the party had after the DLers left.

Cllr John Halligan is a major lose to the workers party locally and nationally, only recently they had their party conference in the city. He is a decent hard working local activist. I don't think he'd join another party but labour is mooted as an option.

Waterfords days as the last bastion of the Workers Party may be numbered.

Eyeing up a Labour nomination post O Shea next time out ?

Never met him, but any time I listened to him, he seemed to be honest and intelligent
