Dunno what posters are griping about, there's no doubt that the murder rate is directly related to drug selling/usage and an inability to curb it. But the rate climbed steadily since their introduction in the 50s or 60s.

There were far fewer ingrown toenails during the time the IRA was active also.
Still trying to get the stats on runny noses.

Unless you're in Temple Bar of course

The fundamental issues in Dublin are to do with the growth of drugs and gangland crime.

The policies in those days were exactly the same / a lot weaker. It was simply that we did not have the backdrop of a huge heroin and cocaine trade.

Provos Policing drug dealers, did that amount to them Licensing Drug dealers effectively taxing them to continue to peddle death to working class people?
I think Alan was dispatched up to heaven by drug lords in recent times!

Some OP title, hard to imagine any validity to "? was a safer place when the IRA were active.......". OP title would cause me to smile only for the murder, mayhem, bloodshed and terror inflicted by the IRA

As for Dublin, great place for a weekend however hotel prices are now ridiculous
