    Mayo County Council Backs Shell

Mayo County Council have rejected a motion asking it to call on Shell to build an offshore terminal, by 13 votes to nine.

The Council had been advised that passing such a motion could leave it open to being sued by Shell. The motion had been proposed by Fianna Fáil, Labour and Independents on the Council.

Afterwards the Shell to Sea campaign and relatives of the five men jailed for contempt over their protests against the controversial gas project said they were disappointed with the outcome. They said they did not see it as a setback to their campaign which would continue.

Maybe this will end Mayo's bizarre love affair with FG once and for all.

So, if you don't support something, you oppose it?

While I would have supprted the motion, you must take the legal advice into account.

    That's just smoke.

What possible reason could Shell have for suing Mayo County Council? And as if they'd do that anyway, given the PR disaster that they're already embroiled in.

My thoughts exactly - there are times when you've gotta believe the lawyers. I would guess that a successful lawsuit by Shell could cost tens of millions, maybe more. And where would the money come from?

Surely that's rubbish - what possible grounds would Shell have to sue them?

Time we buried this deal once and for all. Our parliament writes the laws. Let Shell sue all they like. This gas is an asset of the Irish people and should not be given away to prop up the vast social welfare utopia of Norway.

what a cowardly way of looking at things hiding. So let me get this straight, you are takign the side of the multi-national because they'll sue, over the consituents that you represent, even though they have safety fears.

This isn't one bit surprising. At the end of the day, Shell would be suing the state, as Mayo wouldn't be able to cover the costs. The state could then slap a major resource export tax, and recoup their loss, if, and its a big if given Shell's record of breaching their planning permission already, they lost any compensation case.

Cut to the chase, FG have let the Rossport 5 down, the people of Mayo down, and the state down. Why, because they are cowards at the end of the day.

When are you guys going to put up your next fancy website showing us how cowardly you lot are.

But unfortunately Fianna Fail Governments and ministers have virtually given away these resources to Shell, for reasons known best to themselves. And obviously, as has been pointed out before on this site, why would Shell renegotiate a deal when they could only lose out by doing so?
