    Sunday Mirror Story...

Had a look at the Sunday Mirror this morning, and spotted an 'interesting' story.

It was a story concerning, some racist British officers and Irish soldiers during World War One. The story told of how these racist Brits executed some Irish soldiers under their command for no reason at all -- just because they were Irish. The Irishmen executed, were from all over Ireland, Protestant and Catholic...

Anyone else catch this story in yesterday's Mirror?

It's deplorable of course. I think it makes me more determined to remember the Irish who died in that war.

I read a similar story in some other paper, which listed the 26 Irishmen executed. Each one appeared to have violated military law: desertion, absent without leave, etc.

I don't know about during WW1, but during WW2, half the senior generals in the British Army were Irishmen (mainly Ulster protestants), so I think its a bit of a stretch to argue that the British officer corps viewed Irishmen as an inferior race and executed them randomly.
