Are We On The Verge Of A Constitutional Crisis?

Are We On The Verge Of A Constitutional Crisis?

->Minister D Ahern openly attacks the Mahon Tribunal and its judges tonight.

->Suggestion that Ahern's legal team may go to High Court tomorrow to halt the proceedings of the Tribunal's investiagtion into the large sums of money he received in 1993, 1994 & 1995.

The Tribunal today suggested that an AIB application form was doctored to fit one of Ahern's so called 'Dig Out' stories (The Dec 1993 one). If so, the form would then suggest that Ahern went out seeking a large sum of money to 'back-to-back' the loan he took out. This would be in total contravention to his story that he unexpectantly received IR£22,500 from "friends" on Dec 30th 1993.

Ahern claims that the Dec 1993 lodgement he made was the proceeds of a digout totalling IR£22,500.

Wow. A constitutional crisis: we haven't had one of those in a while. Still, not exactly the Reichstag fire, is it?

Bit of a difference between a political crisis (FG having a hissy fit) and a constitutional crisis. Whatever difficulty this presents (and it may well prompt some musical chairs at the top) will be managed without drama by Fianna Fail.

Charlie Bird seemed a bit over-excited on the 6 o'clock news alright. He seems to have forgotten that, unfortunately, most people don't give a sh*t

So true. This country is going back to the bad old days. Depressing really.

Ahern claims that the Dec 1993 lodgement he made was the proceeds of a digout totalling IR£22,500. The evidence suggests that what was actually lodged was in fact STG£25,000 in cash.
Firstly the content of Dermot Aherne's statement is just the usual sh1te dressed up with a bit of E. Harris nonsense about Justice Denham.
The real message is that Dermot A. still fancies his chances to be leader and he is getting in his defence of the current leader before any of the other hopefuls.

Secondly, in this case you are getting your sums mixed up.
This 22,500 is resonably clearly IR£ 15,000 in cash + IR£ 2,500 cheque from Willdover (D.R.) + draft for IR£ 5,000 (Roevein Ireland controlled by D.R. and he says he advanced this money from Roevin Ireland until he could get the PO'C money).

It is the second digout, IR£ 16,500 (Dermot Carew as bagman) + STG 8,000 from the Manchester dinner that bank records in October 1994 show to be almost cetainly STG 25,000.
There are times when you are simply required to be impolite. There are times when condescension is called for!

Apologies. The IR£22,500 in Dec 1993 is as you say...22,500 Irish Punts.

The Oct 1994 lodgement is the STG£25,000.
