Considering GCHQ has the ability to read every e-mail and listen to every phone call out of Ireland I really don't know why you think this situation isn't already here.
Who could be surprised?
I and many others have been assuming for years past that our phone calls and e-mails are monitored, whether to the U.S. or anywhere else.
Echelon and all that...
15 Jan 2001 -- Fine Gael pledged to end fluoridation because of "serious health concerns".
Just encrypt your e-mails. They can't crack them even if they tried - which they wont
"Who will bailout the IMF after FF is finished with them?"
Next time you ring the US slip some words like "Allah akbar", "filthy infadels" etc into the conservation. Seriously though, the US has been monitoring calls in, out and domestic since the early 80s. Its the land of the free![]()
"The Council of Ministers will have far more power over the budgets of the member states than the federal government in the United States has over the budget of Texas"
Jean-Claude Trichet.
What's different is that they are blatant about it - everyone has known that the technology is there to eavesdrop and that it has been going on for a long time (there are still quite a few innocents about who think it's 'paranoia' to say this). There were also restrictions, in theory at least, on what the government could do so there was some form of redress where anything illegal was discovered. Even if it has been largely notional for a while, there was respect for privacy. What this means is that privacy is to be thrashed - devalued as a feature of ordinary people's lives - another serious diminishment in our status in society.Originally Posted by seabhcan

To encrypt emails you need to get an email encryption certificate. Or to be more accurate, to send somebody an encrypted email, then you need to get hold of the recipient's certificate, which is a pain in the ass (if you're the one who wants to do the encryption).Originally Posted by Aragon
There are other ways of encrypting emails, but I'm pretty sure that they are equally clunky and not very practical, which is why hardly anyone bothers encrypting their emails.....
