Irish Population to Rise to 6 million by 2020?

The UK has today anounced that the population of the nation is to rise to 65 million by 2016 a rise of 4.5 million. 50% of this is due to immigration into the country.

By 2050 its expected to be 77 million.

Now considering Ireland has the highest level of immigration in Europe what population levels can we expect in 10 years?

    Let alone 2050?

Will be a minority by 2050?

It's very likely, but can we please not go through another thread about immigration? This site can't handle them, they turn weird.

In fact, we are at 6 million now. The ROI+north-east population is 6 million now. 4.35 m and 1.7 m are the approxmate figures for both jurisdictions.

I think we already had a topic about this. Something along the lines of what would Ireland be like with a population of 10 million.

Forget about it. In 10 years time(or less) we could be all worrying about emigration and depopoulation on the back of an economic crash. We as a nation have been here before(1970s, 1840s etc etc). Never predict future demographics - its a mugs game.

I hope not. The fate of the Nationalist community in the North is a warning in this regard.

How about this for a twist - what way would a sizeable (naturalized) immigrant community in NI vote on the reunification issue?
There seems little doubt that even a few Seamus Kozowski's or Samuel Nestikov's would have a huge influence on the outcome.

    Unionist question -
Mr Immigrantski - Would you like a decent infrastructure and universal free healthcare?

    Republican question -
Mr Immigrantski - Hows about joining the glorious republic.... declared in arms..blood of the martyrs.. one for all..... organised crime.... institutionalised corruption... repression blah blah blah

Considering we have almost 6 million already, I assume it would be more by 2020.

While there will be a downturn, I don't see mass emigration again.

The projections (on fairly standard assumptions) give 5.1m in the Republic by 2021 and 1.9m in the North in the same year so 7m in total. Of course it's very difficult to predict what migration might be over the period.
