Species numbers, if left alone by humans, are controlled by almost exclusively by food availability. That applies to all species. The human race as a whole have never ever worried about wild creatures getting enough to eat, although up until relatively recently many groups of humans had the sense not to over-exploit their resources.
So I would bring back the wolf and let them get on with it.

It was aimed more at David than anyone else, who has just proven that I wasn't mistaken in thinking he wanted to "just blithely reintroduce the wolf without proper reference to the rest"!Originally Posted by Pax

I'm saying that no special provision is made for any creature. If left alone, they get on with it. That's all I ask.
The wolf would not make any other creature go extinct. But it would survive (if left alone) and that's the main thing.
Minks were released or escaped without 'proper reference to the rest'. They've survived, they haven't been as bad for other fauna as was feared, they are now part of Ireland's fauna.
I don't think you need worry about wildlife getting enough to eat so long as you leave it alone and don't destroy its habitat. Worry about how to pay for fencing around animals people eat.

there was a good programme on RTE last night called Global Wolf. It seems reintroduction is happening right across the world.
Bazinga!
I've no objection so long as he has a Work Permit.
Oh and that this not mean a whole pack of wolves are going to be let loose on native livestock.
I presume this wolf is from Eastern Europe?
Need I say more!
