    Where did you hear this?
Maybe from Vigg O' Mortensen himself.

If it does this it will be a work of fiction - The Battle of Clontarf was not between the Irish and the Vikings - but between two warring factions attempting to gain control of North Leinster. The Vikings fought on both sides in the battle. The myth of Brian Boru driving the Vikings from Ireland - is just that - a myth. By the time of Clontarf the Vikings had become 'more Irish than the Irish themselves' to use a phrase from another period.

Hardly entirely inaccurrate though, as the Irish army, made up of about 8,000 men, had 1,000 vikings in their ranks, yet the Leinster army had only 3,000 leinstermen, the rest being Vikings. It would be more correct to state, that Brian's wasn't an Irish army, as it only represented the south of Ireland, which was either indicative of how much authority he had lost in the northern provinces, or that Ború viewed it as just another battle, therefore his forces needed not to be reinforced. Hoever, as I have stated on another thread, a victory for the vikings would still have been detrimental for native powers (not that they were any better) at this stage.

The Di Caprio roll has been scrapped thank god, Sean Penn is now to play Brian Boru.

Maybe there was more to Mel Gibson's recent trip to Dublin than meets the eye?

You know, i would have said no a couple of years ago but to be honest Di Caprio impressed me in Gangs Of New York as well as in The Departed.

The sad thing about Hollywood's historical dramas in general is that they have to follow a certain kind of narrative, leader emerges conquers all before him, betrayed by evil wife etc (that was the one for Attila). They tend not to be complex and they tend to be one-sided, the 'heroes' are almost always cardboard characters as well, the worst offence is when the characters and cultures appear as counterfeits of today's moral/belief systems with no attempt to portray ancient periods/cultures honestly (even if their belief systems might be outrageous by today's standards). One of my favourite historical films (actually to be precise mythological based in a period in history) is the 13th warrior, it had a more honest treatment of those times - the wife sacrificing herself on the death of a husband, the filthy cursing, the brothers trying to kill the leader of the group so they could take his succession and some comparitive treatment of Islamic versus Norse culture and technology.

Penn is a poor actor, that is dissapointing.

Sorry, his wife was evil? What did that make him?
